Wheat rotting away or destroyed in rain would be a serious concern, if the government fails to work out a solution about its safe storage or exports, Kaveh Zargaran, the chairman of Agriculture Commission of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture has warned.  “Iran’s wheat storage in 2017 is expected to exceed 20 million tons thanks to favorable conditions, following an abundant harvest in September and the fact that about 9.5 million tons of wheat in excess of domestic need were purchased by the government from local farmers last year,” Mehr News Agency quoted Zargaran as saying. A record high of 14 million tons of wheat were domestically produced last year, more than 11.76 million tons of which were purchased from local farmers at guaranteed prices. This helped Iran achieve self-sufficiency in wheat production.  Every year, the government buys strategic crops, including wheat from local farmers at guaranteed prices, to build up its reserves and control prices in the domestic market.
