Tehran with 969.2 people and Semnan with 7.2 living in each square kilometer are the most and least populated provinces in Iran respectively, the findings of the recent National Population and Housing Census show.
Other densely-populated provinces following Tehran are Gilan, Mazandaran, and Qom with 180.2, 137.7 and 113.1 people per square kilometer respectively, IRNA reported.
The least populated provinces after Semnan are Yazd with 8.8 and South Khorasan with 8.1 people.
The latest national census was carried out nationwide from September 24, 2016, in two stages of online and door-to-door registration, Mehr News Agency reported.
The door-to-door phase, which was the second phase, ended on November 18.
