More than 20,000 tons of shrimps have been produced in Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 20, 2016), registering a 17.6% rise year-on-year, said Ali Akbar Khodaei, secretary-general of Seafood Exporters Union.
“Close to 9,000 tons of shrimps worth $40.5 million were exported over the nine months to December 20, indicating a 15.3% and 19.1% growth in weight and value respectively compared with the similar period of last year,” the official was quoted as saying by IRNA.
According to Khodaei, last year’s exports stood at 12,500 tons and the figure is expected to reach 14,000 tons by the end of the fiscal year.
He estimated that production will increase to 25,000 tons next year.
