Close to 2 million tons of wastes were recycled in Iran in the last fiscal year (March 2015-16) to produce nearly 1.3 million tons of polymers and plastic products, the head of Iran Recycling Federation said. “Some 500,000 people are employed in the recycling business, excluding those involved in the collection of waste,” Valiollah Gholami Najafabadi was also quoted as saying by the Persian economic monthly Ayandeh Negar. According to Mostafa Sarmadi, technical deputy of Tehran Department of Environment, per capita waste production in Iran amounts to 750 grams per day, which figure for the capital Tehran stands at 900 grams.
