More than 360 cages have been set up in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in the south, and the Caspian Sea in the north, the agriculture minister said.

“We are planning to increase our fish production capacity through cage farming from the current 1 million tons to 2 million tons per year within the next five years,” Mahmoud Hojjati was also quoted as saying by Merh News Agency.

Cage fish farming is a relatively new method in Iran, wherein cages are placed in lakes, ponds, rivers or seas to breed fish until they can be harvested.

Fish production by cage farming experienced a fourfold increase in the last Iranian year (March 2015-16) compared to the previous year to reach 20,000 tons, according to the head of Iran Fisheries Organization, Hassan Salehi.
