Trade between Iran and Azerbaijan hovers at around $500 million a year, a level that could increase if bilateral ties are expanded, said Ali Rabiee, the minister of cooperatives, labor and social welfare, on Monday.

In a meeting with Azerbaijan’s visiting deputy prime minister in Tehran, he said, “Iran and Azerbaijan enjoy common strategic advantages and can expand bilateral relations in different fields.”

He said, for instance, Iran can share its knowledge of medical activity with Azerbaijan and other neighboring states.

Iran has been trying to build stronger relations with its neighboring countries. On November 13, Mohammad Nahavandian, the chief of staff of President Hassan Rouhani, paid a visit to Baku to discuss ways to expand ties with Azerbaijan.

Ali Hasanov, an Azeri official who is also the chairman of the Republican Commission for International Humanitarian Assistance, has praised Iran as a powerful country which Azerbaijan is keen to expand relations with.
