Iran and Iraq have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the transportation of passengers and cargo, and expand cooperation in the rail industry, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway’s news service reported on Monday.
Based on the MoU, both sides have agreed to facilitate transportation of Iranian pilgrims traveling to the Iraqi city of Karbala. As for cargo transportation, both sides agreed to ease freight transit in the southwestern Shalamcheh border crossing. The agreement also paves the way for Iranian private companies to cooperate with the neighboring country on maintenance and operation of rails and wagons.
