After years of importing Turkish-made furniture products, Iran has started producing its own furniture through acquiring the industrial know-how, Mehdi Saqafi, a former manager of the furniture union told MNA on Wednesday. Employing a group of professional foreign craftsmen, Iranian companies have produced domestically manufactured furniture that can compete with foreign-made products, helping market stability, he said. “Previously, 80 percent of furniture was imported but currently, the percentage has reduced to 50 percent,” Saqafi said. Thousands of companies are active in the furniture industry, and Iranian-made products are being exported to Afghanistan and Iraq, he added. A major furniture exhibition is currently underway in Tehran.
