Iran Fisheries Organization has given the go-ahead for the local farming of tilapia in the central Yazd Province in cooperation with the Department of Environment.

“The US and European countries are major importers of tilapia, which is currently farmed in more than 140 countries. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, global production of the fish is expected to increase from 5,000 tons to 15,000 tons in the next 10 years,” Hassan Salehi was quoted as saying by ISNA.

According to the official, a 32% tariff has been set on the import of tilapia in support of domestic production. More than $60 million worth of tilapia were imported over the past Iranian year (started March 20).
