Iran-Australia Air Services Talks Underway

Australia and Iran are discussing extension of bilateral air services, said Australia Ambassador to Iran Ian Biggs at the CAPA (Center for Asia Pacific Aviation) Iran Aviation Finance Summit on Monday. “The talks involve a couple of airlines and there are hopes that an agreement could eventually lead to direct flights being established between the states,” he was quoted as saying by CAPA’s news service. The ambassador noted that Qantas already uses Iranian airspace for its flights to Europe. The summit, held on Sunday and Monday, was the second large gathering of aviation leaders in Tehran since sanctions were lifted in January. Iranian officials alongside 150 officials and business executives from Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, Canada and China among others participated in this event, which was organized for providing a forum to identify financing solutions for transactions related to Iran’s aircraft acquisition, leasing and development of airport and airspace infrastructure. CAPA held its first international aviation summit in Iran after almost 40 years back on January 24 and 25.
