Watermelon Export Rising

More than 327,000 tons of watermelon worth almost 1.7 billion rials ($47.9) were exported during the first four months of the current fiscal year (March 20-June 20), registering a 6% rise in volume and 17% decline in value compared with last year’s corresponding period, the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration reported. The main export destinations were Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Afghanistan, Germany and Azerbaijan. The increase in exports come as experts warn against the cultivation of water-intensive crops, including watermelon, given the water crisis across the country. The last fiscal year that ended in March, 564,000 tons of watermelons worth $126.6 million were exported.
