Foreign Co. May Invest in Honey Production

A European investor was in Iran on Thursday to study avenues of cooperation in honey production, the Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei said. He did not specify the nationality of the investor. “Iran is known as a major producer of honey worldwide; hence there are vast investment opportunities in this sector,” he was quoted by IRNA as saying. According to National Association of Beekeepers and Honey Producers of Iran, the country produces over 77,000 tons of honey annually from its 6.9 million honeybee colonies, placing it among the top five producers in the world. Last year honey exports earned $6.5 million. Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Persian Gulf littoral states are the main buyers of Iranian honey.
