Close to 1 billion liters of mineral water were produced in Iran over the past fiscal year (March 2015-16), according to the head of Iranian Bottled Water Association. “The industry had nearly $10 million worth of exports last year. Close to 140 production units are active in the field, 110 of which are not operating at full capacity,” ISNA quoted Farhad Besharat as saying. Noting that smuggled mineral water, which could carry health risks to consumers, abounds in the domestic market, the official called for protection of domestic producers in the face of smuggling.
