More than $1.2 million worth of honey were exported during the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 20-May 20, 2016). Bahrain, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Malaysia, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan were the main export destinations, ISNA reported.  Last year’s exports stood at about $6.5 million. According to the Agricultural Jihad Ministry, Iran has over 6.5 million beehives, producing up to 78,000 tons of honey every year. Some 74,000 people are active in Iran’s beekeeping industry.  The city of Khoy in West Azarbaijan Province is the country’s top honey producer.
