Iran’s rail freight transit posted a rare growth of more than 180% since President Hassan Rouhani took office in 2013, Mohammad Gharavi, the head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways’ Transit Committee, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Cargo transit via railroads stood at 35.6 million tons in the last Iranian year (March 2015-16), according to IRIR. "The share of railroads in domestic transportation reached 12.3% last year, up from the 4% registered two years before," he said.
Iran is moving to increase the share of railroads in the transportation sector. Currently, roadways account for up to 90% of transit in the country.
