Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has confirmed that the trilateral Indo-Iranian-Afghan pact for the development of Chabahar Port in the south of Iran will be signed during his and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Tehran next week. The three countries finalized the text of the trilateral transport and transit pact last month. The deal will serve as the legal framework to operate trade corridors with the Iranian port of Chabahar as its main hub, Afghanistan’s Presidential Office announced. Ghani’s trip to Tehran is planned to coincide with that of Modi on May 22. Located in Sistan-Baluchistan Province, Chabahar is of great strategic importance for the three countries. It lies outside the Persian Gulf and is easily accessible from India’s western coast. The port gives India a sea-land access route into Afghanistan through Iran’s eastern borders.
