China’s Guangdong Province and Iran’s Qeshm Free Trade Zone can play a pivotal role in strengthening relations between the two countries, said governor general of the southeastern Chinese province.

Zhu Xiaodan was speaking in a meeting with the visiting managing director of the Iranian FTZ, Hamid Reza Momeni, and his accompanying 15-member economic delegation, IRNA reported.

“As one of China’s most prosperous economies, Guangdong places great importance on cementing ties with Iran,” he said.

“The significance of these ties led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Qeshm as part of the ‘One Belt-One Road’ project.” The two sides recalled banking, finance, insurance, infrastructure, transportation and telecommunications as potential sectors for improving bilateral relations.

The Chinese official announced that several specialized Chinese delegations will visit Qeshm next month.

OBOR is a development strategy and framework, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, that focuses on connectivity and cooperation among regional countries, primarily between China and the rest of Eurasia, which consists of two main components: the land-based “Silk Road Economic Belt” and oceangoing “Maritime Silk Road”.
