Rail freight transit recorded a 120% surge in the 11 Iranian months ending Feb. 19, compared with last year’s corresponding period, IRNA quoted Hossein Ashouri, deputy head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, as saying. The official referred to the lifting of nuclear sanctions on Jan. 16—as part of a July accord between Tehran and the world powers—as the main reason behind the rise in transit figures. Fixed tariffs, new corridors and reduced transit time, according to the official, have incentivized local and international transportation companies to consider Iran’s rail routes for business.
