Use of public transport decreased by 19% in the first half of the current year (March 21-September 22), compared to the same period last year.

“Public transport means have been used 88 million times during this six-month period, which shows 19% decrease as compared with the same period last year,” According to statistics released by the public relations office of the Ministry of Roads and Transportation.  

Statistics also shows that goods transit has increased 7% in comparison with the same period last year.

Eleven million travelers have used air transport in the first half of the current year that shows 16% increase. Use of maritime transportation has also steadily increased by 11% compared to the similar period in the previous year.

Iran has an extensive road and rail system linking most of its towns and all of the big cities. Dozens of cities have airports that serve passengers and cargo planes. Trains operate on 11,106 km of railroad tracks. The country’s major port of entry is Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province. After arriving in Iran, imported goods are distributed throughout the country by trucks and freight trains. It is estimated that more than one million people work in the transportation sector, accounting for 9% of the GDP.
