The transnational nature of agricultural and environmental challenges faced by Iran and its neighbours would require a concerted regional approach to address them effectively and in a sustainable manner, the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to Iran said Tuesday. Serge Nakouzi made the remarks after presenting his letter of credentials yesterday to Shamil Aleskerov, the Secretary-General of the Economic Cooperation Organization as FAO’s accredited representative to ECO. Some of the key areas touched upon during the meeting as requiring cooperation between the two organizations included water scarcity, food insecurity, transboundary plant and animal diseases, inadequate agricultural statistics and information systems, as well as enhancement of agricultural productivity and promotion of agro-ecology and climate smart agriculture in the region.
