Illegal imports account for 75% of all the goods smuggled into and out of Iran, according to the head of Central Taskforce to Combat Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Currency. Habibollah Haqiqi said last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2015), smuggling declined to $19.8 billion from the preceding year’s $25 billion. Outbound smuggling dropped by 47% to reach $4.4 billion and inbound smuggling reduced by 9% to hit $15.4 billion. Fuel accounts for 90% of commodities smuggled out of the country, mainly through the cities bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is because of the considerable difference between prices in Iran and those in neighboring countries. Garments, home appliances, cellphones, computers and parts, auto spare parts, cosmetics and cigarettes are the main commodities smuggled into Iran.
