More than 2,600 tons of hand-woven carpets worth $142 million were exported from March to October, which indicate a 15% and 14% decline in volume and value respectively compared with the similar period of last year, the head of Iran’s National Carpet Center announced. Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Lebanon, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, China and Japan were the main buyers of Iranian carpets during the period, Hamid Kargar was quoted as saying by IRNA. Kargar attributed the fall in exports to western sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program.
