Paraguay Eyes Iran Meat Market

Paraguay is banking on Iran to increase its meat exports in early 2016 amid a huge surplus, said the South American country’s deputy agriculture minister, Marcos Medina. Paraguay exported more than 199,000 tons of meat worth $825 million to 45 countries in 2015 until the end of October.  Lately, the country has added France, Moldova, Armenia and Uruguay to the list of its meat export destinations, IRNA cited an article in Argentinean daily La Nacion as reporting. Paraguay’s plan to start exporting meat to Iran comes amid a surge in Iran’s imports of the commodity. Iran’s red meat import from March to August increased by at least 250% compared with the similar period of last year, according to Iran Customs Administration.  During the period, the country imported 42,600 tons of frozen beef worth $221.8 million.
