Iran’s railroad will be connected to Azerbaijan Republic’s rail network in 18 months, announced Governor of Gilan Province Mohammad Ali Najafi in a statement addressing a specialized energy exhibition dubbed “Iran Project” held in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on Tuesday.  In early October, Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Industry Shahin Mustafayev signed a deal on the construction of the railroad at a meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Cooperation Commission. Under the deal, Baku will extend its railroads by 8 kilometers up to the border from where Iran needs to build 2 kilometers of railroads inside the country. The project is part of a broader plan to connect Central Asia to Northern Europe through the so-called “International North-South Transport Corridor”. The three-day Iran Project exhibition (November 17-19) is aimed at boosting non-oil export and easing trade between Iran and Azerbaijan.
