The municipalities will participate in the government’s newly announced “social” housing scheme, the deputy minister of roads and urban development told ILNA on Monday. The municipalities will issue construction permits to investors in case they accept to allocate 10 percent of their construction projects to low-income earners listed by the government, Pirooz Hanachi said. The Rouhani administration has initiated the “social” housing scheme to help millions of low-income households buy apartments in the suburban areas of big cities. This project seeks to replace the highly controversial multi-billion-dollar ‘Mehr Housing Project, which was a product of the government of former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
