About 4.5 million tons of potatoes are expected to be produced by the end of the current crop year, indicating almost no change compared to last year, says head of the National Potato Association, Seyyed Rahim Niazi.
«Farmers have incurred heavy losses due to a drop in potato prices as a result of interim high tariffs on exports leading to a glut in the domestic market,» Niazi was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency, adding that the tariffs have now been relaxed, however much of the export markets have been lost.
«To rebalance the domestic market, the government should increase exports by supporting farmers by granting export incentives,» he added.
