Dogharoun is Iran’s top border customs office in terms of employing modern management technologies, electronic infrastructures and computerization.
Located on the Iran-Afghanistan border in Khorasan Razavi Province, Dogharoun handles all customs-related procedures such as imports, exports and transit via a comprehensive electronic system that makes it possible for businesses to conduct long-distance trade, IRNA reported.
Iran has lately turned to electronic customs to help the government organize customs affairs, increase efficiency in supervision and management of border trade and combat smuggling.
Dogharoun is equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray control systems, which enable the scanning of consignments and their matching with the source to prevent any violations. It is also equipped with a monitoring room that complies with international standards.
“Using this equipment, customs officers have been able to discover 28 tons of drugs in the past few months,” said director general of the customs office, Omid Jahankhah.
Dogharoun, with a history of more than 100 years, is one of the oldest border crossings of Iran. It sits across Islam Qal’eh Customs Office in Afghanistan’s Herat Province.
Besides e-customs, Herat’s security compared to other Afghan regions’ and high Iranian investments in the region have helped the border trade to expand.
According to Jahankhah, more than $500 million worth of goods were exported via Dogharoun in the first six months of the current Iranian year (started March 21), with plastic products accounting for a majority of exports.
Also, $12 million worth of commodities were imported via the border office during the period.
On average, 600 transit trucks and 4,000 passengers cross the border terminal every day.
