Iran and Vietnam have signed memorandums of understanding on expansion of economic cooperation, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

In his visit to Tehran, the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, met Vice-President for Executive Affairs Mohammad Shariatmadari.

The new cooperation agreements include the avoidance of double taxation, coordination of administrative affairs in border customs, and increasing technology, research and education cooperation, among other things. The two sides also agreed to increase bilateral trade to $500 million in the next few years, Shariatmadari said.Tehran has asked Vietnam to help accelerate the signing of a Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between Iran and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The 50-member businessmen from the Vietnamese private sector are currently in Iran to explore ways of developing economic cooperation with their Iranian counterparts. Phuc noted Iran’s huge potential in tourism and also hailed the country’s recent progress in industrial and scientific fields. Phuc had earlier this week met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif during which they agreed on taking specific measures to enhance bilateral cooperation.
