More than 230,000 tons of bananas worth about $183 million were imported during the first five months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2015).  This high amount, according to Forsat-e-Emrooz daily, came amid low and stable price of bananas in the Iranian market and substantial demand for this fruit inside the country. Farmers have unanimously criticized what they call “excessive” import of bananas, as they believe this will make consumers walk away from purchasing other domestically produced fruits.
