Walnut Warning

Head of Kerman Province’s Walnut Association, Farshad Soltaninejad says frostbite, pests and heavy summer showers have made the situation critical for Iran’s walnut growers. “In case the situation is not attended to with due care [by the government], the whole sector will vanish in the next five years,” he said in an interview with Eghtesad News on Saturday. According to Soltaninejad, Kerman, accounting for most of Iran’s walnut production, has so far registered a 40-50% drop in yield in the current crop year compared to the year before, with production standing at 25,000 tons.
