Production of mineral paper, a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper, is set to get going in two months, announced the CEO of Pishgaman Asr Ertebatat Cooperative Company.

“The mineral paper manufacturing unit has been established in Yazd Province with the initial investment of $16.6 million and the production capacity of 5,000 tons per year,” said Karim Nejad, adding that 110 job opportunities will be created in the process.

Mineral paper is completely green, requires no water or cutting trees and is made from limestone, the reserves of which can be found in abundance in Yazd, he was quoted by IRNA as saying.

Mineral paper, also known as stone paper, has a good few advantages over traditional paper made from wood pulp; it collects no static charge, is acid-free, has no grain, is water, grease and insect resistant, and does not tear easily due to its latex-like texture. It is mostly used in packaging, making of maps, field notebooks, waterproof journals, posters, banners and outdoor signs to withstand weathering.

Pishgaman Asr Ertebatat Cooperative Company is a leading technology firm in Iran, active in fields such as telecommunications, assembly of electronic boards and production LED lamps since 2006.
