Italy is set to join the ranks of Iranian shrimp customers, says the head of Aquaculture Affairs Department at Iran’s Fisheries Organization. “Italy has recently requested to examine Iranian shrimp production facilities in order to start shrimp imports from Iran,” ISNA quoted Hassan Abdollahi as saying. According to the official, initial estimation for this Iranian year’s (started March 21) shrimp production was 30,000 tons, but considering falling global prices of the product, the more realistic forecast would be 25,000 tons. About 12,000 tons of shrimp were exported last Iranian year. With Italy as well as Russia becoming new customers for Iranian shrimp, exports are expected to reach up to 15,000 tons by the end of this year, he added.
