Fuel accounts for more than 90% of goods smuggled from Iran to other countries, said the head of Iran Customs Administration adding that gold is the smugglers’ favorite commodity when it comes to contraband brought into the country. Blaming the inclination toward gold smuggling on high import costs and excessive paperwork, Masoud Karbasian said clothes, mobile phones, furniture and cigarettes top the list of goods smuggled into the country after gold. “No economy has ever managed to eliminate smuggling altogether; however intergovernmental collaboration can help reduce it,” Eghtesad News quoted the official as saying.
