Rail freight transport between Iran and Turkey increased by 63% during the past Iranian calendar year (ended March 20) compared with a year earlier, head of Azerbaijan Railway Headquarter, Mirhassan Mousavi, told IRNA. Speaking at the Iran-Turkey railway border meeting on Tuesday, the official said 239,000 metric tons of cargo was shipped between the two countries using 7,757 freight wagons last year. Iran and Turkey plan to increase freight transport by 20% in the current year, according to the official. Azerbaijan Railway Headquarters manages the railway in three provinces, namely East and West Azerbaijan and Ardabil. The annual meeting between the heads of Azerbaijan and Malatya railway headquarters of Iran and Turkey is aimed at facilitating and expanding rail transport of goods and passengers between the two countries.
