Iranian and Afghan officials have signed a memorandum of understanding  on road cooperation to facilitate transportation between the two neighboring countries.  The deal was signed by the head of Iran’s Road Maintenance Organization, Davoud Keshavarzian, and Afghanistan’s deputy minister of transportation, Jarallah Mansouri, during Iran-Afghanistan Fifth Joint Commission Meeting.  “Tens of thousands of trucks are annually travelling between the two countries,” the Iranian official was quoted by IRNA as saying. For his part, the Afghan official called on Iranian authorities to allow Afghan to use the southeastern Chabahar Port in the Gulf of Oman, saying “the strategic port enables Afghanistan as well as other Central Asian countries to improve their transit activities.”
