The export of water-intensive crops such as watermelon and potato will intensify the ongoing water crisis in Iran, agricultural expert Sadegh Beyknejad told ISNA on Saturday. He warned that if these crops continue to be grown domestically, the country’s plains will soon turn into deserts. According to the expert, traditional agriculture along with farmers’ economic problems are behind the widespread negligence in heeding the exacerbating water shortage crisis.
