About 10,000 metric tons of silk cocoons are produced in Iran annually, IRNA quoted head of Sericulture Organization, Ali-Asghar Dadashpour as saying. He added that about 200,000 mulberry saplings are cultivated annually, adding that the number should reach up to 1 million.  The northern Gilan Province is the country’s main region for sericulture, supplying about 50 percent of the national production. The Caspian provinces of Mazandaran and Golestan follow with 16-20 percent.
