About $2 billion worth of apparel is smuggled into the country annually, while legal imports are 333 times less at $6 million, Eghtesad News quoted deputy industry minister Mojtaba Khosrotaj as saying. The illegally imported clothing in the market neither meets the due quality standards set by the government nor does it generate revenues for the government from import duties. Experts say only 20 percent of the apparel in the market is produced domestically.
