Based on new import regulations for the current year (started March 21), all industrial commodities are allowed to be imported, senior official at Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), Abbas Hosseini, said on Wednesday.

“The only exception pertains to the import of luxury cars with engine displacement of over 2500cc,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying.

Last year, the ministry of industry, mine and trade banned the import of luxury cars, which include renowned brands such as Porsche, Mercedes Benz, BMW and Maserati.

“Based on the type of commodities, there are different sets of rules and regulations that must be met by all those engaged in import activities,” he added.

Referring to the import of agricultural commodities, he said: “According to the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2011-2016), the agriculture ministry is at the helm of supervising imports and exports of agricultural goods.”

The agriculture ministry has banned the import of certain commodities and such bans are still in place. There are, however, specific regulations which allow certain agricultural goods to be imported to the country.”

He further added that those who wish to import medicine and food stuff need to obtain the necessary license, saying: “Importers of medicine and food stuff must be able to meet the sanitary and hygienic standards.”
