Tilapia Imports Up 235%

The import of tilapia fish increased by 235 percent in the first ten months of the current year (March 21-January 20), ISNA reported on Saturday. Despite the disputes over the import of this type of fish, regarding its threat to the consumers’ health and marine ecosystem, more than $37 million worth of tilapia were imported during the period. Due to tilapia’s fast breeding rate, it can occupy much of the water habitats quickly, therefore can eliminate other native species of fish and aquatic life, causing harm to biodiversity.
