More than 56 hectares of land is currently under saffron cultivation in the western province of Kermanshah, which shows a notable growth compared to two years ago when merely 6 hectares of land was allocated to saffron farming, Afshin Safavi, an official in the ministry of agricultural Jihad told ILNA. Kermanshah has harvested 170 kilograms of saffron in the current year (ending March 20), he said. Iran produced up to 190 metric tons of saffron this year according to official statistics. The production level has decreased about 30 percent, since last year when 200 tons of saffron was produced. Over 83 thousand hectares of farm land is currently under saffron cultivation in Iran.
