Telecoms Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi has urged the Central Bank of Iran to help crack down on online gambling which, he warned, is spreading at an alarming rate. “There have been reports of an increase in gambling and betting activities on the Internet. This cyber and financial phenomenon is spreading fast in the society, which should raise an alarm, particularly in the cyber and payment sectors,” Jahromi told IBENA on Tuesday. “Although such cyber crimes fall within the jurisdiction of Iranian Cyber Police (FATA), the cooperation of related organizations is necessary for the national anti-gambling campaign to succeed.” Jahromi stressed that CBI is bound to offer full cooperation in this regard. “Deterrent penalties need to be devised in the judicial system to stamp out online gambling and betting, and force cyber firms into compliance,” he concluded.
