Top officials from the Information and Communications Technology Ministry and the Central Bank of Iran are to meet in the coming days to discuss plans to introduce a cryptocurrency. “President [Hassan Rouhani] is working to clarify the legal basis for the creation of cryptocurrencies and a related meeting is scheduled with CBI Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati in a few days,” ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi told IBENA on Friday. Jahromi noted that currently, the use of any type of cryptocurrency has been banned by Iran’s Anti-Money Laundering Council. “The ban is meant to prevent an outflow of foreign currency and fight money-laundering accusations against the country. I believe CBI will soon announce a revised policy,” he added.
