A total of 585,906 cases of theft were reported in the fiscal 2016-17, registering a rise of 7% compared with five years before, the Statistical Center of Iran said. The nationwide rate was one case per 136 people while theft from cars and home burglary accounted for 40% and 14% of all reported cases. Provinces with the most theft cases were Tehran with 36% of total cases, Khorasan Razavi with 12%, Alborz with 8%, Khuzestan with 5.5% and Isfahan with 5%. Alborz one per 61 people, Tehran reported one theft case per 63 people, Khorasan Razavi one per 93 people, Semnan one per 96 people, and Qom reported one case per 102 residents. Provinces with the lowest number of reported theft cases included Kurdestan with one per 486 people, Gilan with one per 476 people, Hamedan with one theft case per 474 people, West Azarbaijan with one per 393 people, and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari with one theft per 356 residents.
