Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov discussed economic ties with the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, Foroud Asgari.
The Iranian official said the customs officials of Iran and Azerbaijan focused on issues related to increasing the work hours of customs checkpoints and simplifying and accelerating the transit of goods, as well as the electronic exchange of information, the official news agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan AzerTac reported on Saturday.
He underlined the importance of customs cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for the development of trade relations, stressing that efforts will be increased in this area.
Talibov pointed to bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, and hailed the importance of the meeting of customs officials for boosting cooperation between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The chairman of Nakhchivan’s Supreme Assembly also underlined the importance of enhancing cooperation in the field of customs.
Chairman of Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee Safar Mehdiyev and Consul General of Iran to Nakhchivan Mansur Ayrom also attended the meeting.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is a landlocked exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The region covers 5,500 square kilometers with a population of 410,000, bordering Armenia to the east and north, Iran to the south and west, and Turkey to the northwest.
Nakhchivan’s major industries include the mining of minerals such as salt, molybdenum and lead. Dryland farming, developed during the Soviet years, has allowed the region to expand into growing wheat (mostly cultivated on the plains of Aras River), barley, cotton, tobacco, orchard fruits, mulberries and grapes.
Other occupations include cotton ginning/cleaning, silk spinning, fruit canning, meat packing, and, in the dryer regions, sheep farming.
Nakhchivan is also known for processing minerals, radio engineering, silk, meat and dairy production, bottling of mineral waters, clothing and furniture.
