Train Fares Rise 10%

Train fares have risen by 10% as of June 22, a member of the board of directors of the Association of Rail Transportation Companies announced. Alireza Sheikh Taheri was speaking on the sidelines of the Sixth International Exhibition of Rail Transportation and Related Industries and Equipment, also known as ‘RailExpo 2018’. Referring to Consumers and Producers Protection Organization’s opposition to the 20% hike in fare pushed by the Iranian rail transportation companies, Sheikh Taheri added that the last fare increase was in the fiscal 2015-16, IRNA reported. “The hike in train fares was inevitable, given the country’s annual 10% increase in inflation rate and the spiraling costs of rail companies, including the rise in the prices of equipment and wages,” he said. RailExpo 2018 concluded in Tehran on Friday after four days. Some 90 companies from Germany, China, Russia, Latvia, Spain, Turkey, the Czech Republic and Austria participated in the international event.
