Commercial truck rental rates will increase by up to 20% as of Saturday, the deputy head of Islamic Republic of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization said. Noting that setting new rental rates is only one of the demands put forth by truck drivers, Dariush Amani also told ILNA that retirement on a minimum-wage salary and removal of government subsidies on their insurance are other issues that concern truck drivers. On Thursday, thousands of truck drivers continued to refuse loading and transferring cargo and fuel, as the strike by truck drivers swept cities across the country. They began a nationwide strike on May 22 to protest low wages, high taxes and lack of job security.
