Close to 40 billion cigarettes were produced in Iran during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2017), registering a 12% increase compared with last year’s corresponding period, the chairman of Tobacco Planning and Supervision Center said. “Cigarette imports over the period stood at 2.4 billion, showing a 35% fall year-on-year, while exports of the product amounted to around 330 million, indicating a 121% upsurge,” Ali Asghar Ramzi was also quoted as saying by IRNA. The official estimated that close to 4 billion cigarettes were smuggled into the country during the 10 months, indicating a 41% decline compared with the corresponding period of last year. Last year, some 45 billion cigarettes were produced in Iran. Plans are to increase this figure to 50 million by the end of the current year (March 20). According to Ramzi, domestic cigarette production meets more than 90% of demand in Iran, as Iranians annually consume close to 55 billion cigarettes.
