Bank Melli Iran has shifted its corporate social responsibility activities to cover the medical expenses of needy patients, BMI's CEO has announced. In a report published on the bank's website, Hosseinzadeh noted that BMI's Board of Directors has allocated more than 62 billion rials ($1.7million) to 30 charitable causes, including for repairing infant care centers, financial assistance for cancer charities, donating ambulances and constructing schools and clinics for underdeveloped areas across the country."There was a time when there was a shortage of schools. Thus, as a pioneer, BMI started building them," he said.Hosseinzadeh referred to his recent heart-wrenching experience at seeing a child suffering from cancer and the insufficiency of medical facilities, especially in underdeveloped areas as the reason for BMI's policy shift. BMI has also paid 10 billion rials ($270,000) on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan (started May 27) for seeking the release of prisoners convicted of unintentional crimes.
