Shadegan Steel Plant’s direct iron reduction unit is scheduled to be inaugurated on Sunday by President of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization Masoud Karbasian. The plant will be one of the first DRI units in Iran to be equipped with the PERED indigenized iron ore direct reduction method developed jointly by Iran and Germany, IMIDRO reported on its website. The technology, which makes optimum use of energy and raw material, reduces production costs with the added advantage of being more environment-friendly compared to other direct reduction methods. Shadegan Steel, located in the southwestern Khuzestan Province, is capable of producing 800,000 tons of semi-finished steel products per year. According to World Steel Association, Iran is the world’s largest DRI producer. A majority of Iranian steelmakers use DRI as feedstock.
